Health workshops: Confident, healthy and educated

School attendance is not a given for many children and young people in Malawi, especially for girls. Poverty, social constraints and a lack of health care make access to education considerably more difficult. The Christian-Liebig-Stiftung e.V. (CLS) wants to change this. Our goal is not only to make it possible for pupils to attend school, but also ensure that they are healthy enough to do so.

Health workshops: Knowledge that changes daily life and the future

The health workshops held regularly by Dr. Chisomo Tumeo give pupils in Malawi the opportunity to gain vital knowledge that helps them in their day-to-day lives. Chisomo Tumeo not only imparts medical knowledge, but also explains simple but effective measures for preventing illnesses. Whether it’s about how to wash hands properly, eating healthily or basic hygiene, participants receive practical tips for how to protect their health.

Promoting women’s health: A space for education and trust

A particular focus is on women’s health, as girls are often especially vulnerable. Many of them become mothers at a young age and are unaware of the health risks. In a protected space, supported by two nurses, Chisomo talks to girls about topics such as breast cancer prevention, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. These workshops not only provide information, but also an opportunity to share concerns and ask questions – an important step towards a healthier and more empowered life.

Washable cloth sanitary pads: A simple step towards more independence

Another obstacle that often prevents girls from attending school is their period. They are forced to stay at home during their period if they lack the necessary hygiene products. This affects their school performance and exacerbates existing inequalities.

That’s why we produce washable cloth sanitary pads. These sustainable sanitary pads, which are distributed as part of the health workshops, enable girls to attend school even during their periods. Each girl receives five washable cloth sanitary pads, which cost four euros each – a small amount that makes a big difference.

Local production: An opportunity for the community

Abednego Herabo: As a man, he is looking forward to a project in which he gets to know and understand the needs of women and changes his perspective on menstrual problems.

The cloth pads are made by sewers at Kibébé, an initiative that offers refugees in Malawi fair pay and training opportunities. Under the umbrella of the There Is Hope Foundation, Kibébé enables its sewers to learn valuable crafting skills, earn their own income and build a better future.

This means that every donation is doubly beneficial: it supports the girls’ education while strengthening the economic and social development of the community.
