Nkuyu community centre

A community centre for Nkuyu

Electricity, education and a haircut

Nkuyu is remote – so far off the beaten track that it is often completely cut off from the outside world during the rainy season. The roads turn into impassable, washed-out riverbeds, and even lorries have difficulty getting there. But the local people are not giving up – on the contrary, they are seizing every opportunity to promote their community and improve community work.

building of a community centre in progress

Construction of the community centre is progressing rapidly.

The village is developing

The village has undergone a major transformation in recent years. A functioning village community is gradually growing in place of what used to be a few dilapidated classrooms and scattered houses: with new teachers’ houses, a community garden, electricity supply and more and more places for people to meet, learn and work.

A new meeting place for the community

An important question arose after Nkuyu received a solar power system last year: How can the community maintain the system itself and cover the running costs? The solution: a community centre that not only provides space for computers provided by the Christian Liebig -Stiftung e.V., but also includes a small shop and a barbershop.

You can find a hairdresser on almost every corner here: for a quick haircut, a little relaxation or a short break in between – a luxury, in other words. It’s different in Nkuyu: here, it’s essential, because for many people in the region, it’s the only place where they can have their hair cut or braided professionally. This is important because their hair structure requires regular care and a well-groomed appearance also plays a major role in school and work.

The income from the community centre enables the school to generate additional funds and at the same time ensures that the solar system can be maintained in the long term.

A small village shop has now been set up, which for the first time can also offer refrigerated goods. This is a real step forward, as a cold drink was previously a pure luxury in Nkuyu. The integrated internet café has also changed life in the village: instead of having to walk for several hours to access a computer, pupils, teachers and the entire community now have digital access right in the village.

A joint project with a future

Federal Association of German Foundations

The people of Nkuyu are impressively committed to their school and their village. They had already built a teacher’s house with our material aid in order to attract teachers to this remote region.

Electricity has proven to be a key factor in this: it not only enables the community centre to operate, but also helps to attract teachers to this rural region.

Investment in independence

The project cost a total of around 6,000 euros. The new community centre is now open. But the development does not end there: the community’s independence grows with every step. This is not just about buildings, but about sustainable prospects that combine education, energy and economic opportunities.
