new sanitary facilities for girls' dormitory

Running water and real privacy

New sanitary facilities for the girls’ residence in Mtakataka

When we first visited the girls’ residence in Mtakataka, it was clear that something desperately needed to change. The conditions were unacceptable. Dark rooms without windows, dilapidated walls and sanitary facilities that offered only the bare minimum. The residence had already undergone extensive renovation a few years ago: new rooms were created, the existing ones were refurbished, and the bathroom was given a new coat of paint, as the structure was still intact. However, it has since become apparent that the building fabric has deteriorated, and a fundamental renovation is necessary.

Old sanitary facilities

The bathrooms were in an unacceptable condition.

Real improvement: running water

Five years after the first renovation, moisture had severely damaged the walls due to being used significantly more often. The plaster was therefore completely removed, and since we were already making significant changes to the building fabric, we decided to make further major changes: new water pipes and showers with running water. Previously, the girls had to carry water in buckets – a cumbersome and unhygienic solution. Now they have showers, which make everyday life much easier.

More light, more privacy, more dignity

The girls are delighted with their new bathrooms.

In addition to the new showers, the sanitary facilities also received functioning toilets with proper doors that finally offer privacy. Stand-up squat toilets were installed because flush toilets require a lot of maintenance. The entire bathroom was also painted in light colours and fitted with mirrors. Another improvement: electricity! Although the dormitory was connected to the mains two years ago, the bathroom was not – it was pitch black. Now there is light – the girls no longer have to go to the toilet in the dark at night.+

Every euro counts: what the renovation costs

The extensive renovation will ultimately cost around €4,000. This has not only made the girls’ dormitory more hygienic, but also a much more pleasant place to live. Clean, safe sanitary facilities are not a given, and they make a huge difference for the girls in Mtakataka. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to make sustainable improvements here!
