When classes began at Liwiro Secondary School in autumn 2024, the new classrooms quickly filled with energy and laughter. Outside, however, the vast schoolyard remained bleak—little more than a barren expanse.
Heavy construction equipment had left behind a dusty, vegetation-free plain. In the dry season the ground bakes; in the rains it turns to mud. To give students a space they could truly use and enjoy, one thing was clear: the campus needed trees, plants, and proper walkways.
The school grounds needed some green space.
To bring the site to life and adapt it to local conditions, the school launched a greening project. Native species such as jacaranda and papaya are being planted. Papaya trees not only grow quickly and cast welcome shade, they will eventually bear fruit. Gravel paths will keep the grounds walkable and prevent the swampy puddles that form during heavy downpours.
A special feature is a reading corner with a circular stone bench and table – an inviting spot where students can retreat to read or study beneath the young trees as they mature.

The effort is far more than a cosmetic upgrade. A dedicated student group calling themselves the Liwiro Eco Warriors tends the new plantings, waters the saplings, and re-seeds grass to ensure the greenery takes hold. The first few years are critical as the plants adapt to the region’s harsh climate.
So far, the entire project has cost only about €3,000 – remarkably little for transforming an area roughly the size of a football field. Costs stay low because much of the work is done by volunteers and materials are sourced locally.
Thanks to supporters’ contributions, Liwiro Secondary School is on its way to becoming more than a place of learning: it will be a welcoming landscape where children can rest in the shade and enjoy nature. Every donation helps turn this once-barren yard into a thriving green oasis.
