Dual Purpose Labs at the Christian Liebig Secondary School

One Room, Two Roles

At Christian Liebig Secondary School, a classroom is rarely just a classroom. Space is limited, so nearly every room serves multiple purposes—hosting lessons, exams, or specialized courses. The new computer lab is a prime example. It occupies a former science room, chosen both for practicality and necessity: there simply wasn’t a separate IT space. The school’s largest, most timeworn classroom was therefore transformed to meet two needs at once.

The room before renovation – clearly in need of attention

Freshly renovated and fully equipped

Today the labs shine with new equipment

On one side of the room, the original sinks for chemistry and physics remain. On the other, the renovation brought 20 computer workstations and wall-mounted ventilators to keep air circulating—welcome relief during exams and when the computers generate heat.

Technology meets fresh air

A second lab, in service for nearly 20 years, was also overhauled. Termites had quietly hollowed out its wooden structure, a common challenge in rural Malawi. After a complete refurbishment, the room now boasts two new fans to keep conditions comfortable.

From blackboard to keyboard

With these upgrades, students can now learn not only physics and chemistry but also computer science—a vital step toward future-ready education.

Renovation costs to date, including computers, security grilles, and ventilation, total around €4,000. Specially designed tables will follow this summer, built by longtime supporter Ivan Chevillotte.
