Creating Space for Learning and Opportunity

A house with potential

Just a short walk from the Christian Liebig Secondary School (CLSS), a building is taking shape that promises more than shelter—it offers possibility. Originally launched as the Wood Furniture Build and Maintenance Project, supporter Ivan Chevillotte began funding and constructing it as a workshop and living space for his training program. Young people would learn to build furniture while improving the school’s facilities.

But as the walls rose, its potential became clear: this house could serve the entire school community. Ivan decided to donate it permanently as an investment in better living and learning conditions.

The structure is now up, with windows and doors installed. The next step is electricity: wiring is complete and the house is waiting for a solar system. Soon, three to four apprentices or visiting teachers will have a welcoming place to stay.

Learning, building, thinking ahead

At the same time, a small workshop hall is being built on the school grounds and connected to the campus power supply. Centrally located, it will open new opportunities:

  • CLSS students can gain hands-on experience in woodworking classes.
  • Apprentices can use machines that require more power.
  • Under guidance, trainees will craft urgently needed items: tables and cabinets for the new computer lab, library furniture, and replacements for worn-out equipment.

The aim is to teach practical skills and give young people a real path into the workforce. Over time, the workshop will welcome more youth from Mdeka, offering vocational training, mentorship, and a place to grow.

Construction of the new house is well underway.

Plans for a new tomorrow

The project is more than a single building—it’s part of a broader vocational initiative. Future plans include structured training sessions, practical projects, and opportunities to earn income through commissioned work. A special emphasis is on inclusion, encouraging girls and young women to participate and develop trade skills.

Lasting space for education

The combined workshop and teacher residence stands close to the school.

Ivan’s house will provide comfortable accommodation for apprentices and visiting teachers alike. In a region where many educators live without reliable electricity, water, or privacy, such housing is a real advantage—helping attract and retain qualified staff.

What began as one man’s personal vision is becoming a house of lasting impact: supporting trainees, teachers, and the entire school community.
